Service Learning Frequently Asked questions:
What is the purpose of a Service Learning project?
Service Learning is a district-wide initiative that combines curriculum with hands-on opportunities to
learn about citizenship and a persons’ role in the community.
How many acts of service will my child have to do?
Each person/group should have a minimum of 3 visits or acts of service.
How will my child fit Service Learning into their already busy schedule?
Since each group/person chooses an issue with which they would like to work, students
should plan their project to fit into their schedule(s). There are no set times required for service as long
as the service requirements are met by the deadline.
My child is already doing community service for a group outside of school. Can this also count toward the Service Learning Project requirements?
Because we would like students to conduct research on a community of need and work for themselves to
find a way to meet that need, each student will need to conduct service in an area in which they are not
already involved.
How much will parents need to be involved with the Service Learning process? (transportation, etc.)
If you are unable to provide transportation for students to complete service outside of school, there are
many different opportunities open for service that can be done from home or within the school.
Students should explore many different options to seek out how they can address their issue. They should plan
with you and their group members before the Action Plan is signed.
How will I be sure my child stays safe while completing their service?
All aspects of service should be included in the Action Plan. Students should never do anything that is
not outlined in their Action Plan. The plan must be signed by Mrs. Hulick and by
you before service can begin.
For how long has Terrill been including a Service Learning project in the 7th grade curriculum?
This is the tenth year of an official Service Learning project at Terrill. Last year it was very successful
and we have high expectations for this year’s group as well.
How will this project benefit my child in the future?
Service Learning experience looks great on any resume, but more importantly, we hope that your child
finds the service rewarding and continues to serve the community in a variety of ways.
How heavily will Service Learning impact my child’s grade in Social Studies?
Service Learning is a major part of the 3rd marking period grade and part of the 4th marking period as
well. This includes research, class participation, related homework assignments, the
final project, etc.
Will I be able to see my child present their project?
Yes! A day of sharing will be arranged so families and community members will be able to
celebrate each student’s accomplishments. The date and time is TBA.
